What is GeoCaching?

GeoCaching starts with placing a "Cache" and publishing its GPS coordinates on the GeoCaching web site.  A "Cache" can be a container full of "Trade Items", a small item like a film canister (called a "MicroCache") or just a location (called a "Virtual Cache").

Once a Cache has been placed and published, others "Hunt" the cache, sign the logbook (for Regular and Micro Caches) and log their experiences on the Web site for everyone to see.

Where does GEOCKY come in?

GEOCKY (pronounced "Jockey") was formed in 2003 to promote safe and responsible GeoCaching in Kentucky.

Our Mission Statement:
"The GeoCachers of Kentucky (GEOCKY) is a group of individuals who are committed to promoting responsible and enjoyable GeoCaching in the state of Kentucky. We encourage cooperation with land managers. GEOCKY also provides the means for people to organize regional activities and events that will promote the credibility of the sport."

The organization has four major goals.

First, to promote GeoCaching as a sport to the local community.  We enjoy our hobby and want other interested people to join in.

Second, to work to build a better understanding between GeoCachers and those responsible for maintaining the land on which we Cache.  This means working with land management authorities and fellow GeoCachers to make sure our hobby does not break any land use rules or upset property owners.  GEOCKY is gathering lists of contacts for local parks, and opening the lines of communication between land owners and Cachers.

Third, we want build a community of GeoCachers so we can get together and swap stories and have some fun.  After all, fun is what GeoCaching is all about.

Finally, to make a positive contribution to the Central Kentucky area.  We plan "Cache-in Trash-out" events at parks that  need a good cleanup and other community-oriented activities to show GeoCaching in a positive light.
